This is step number one. Search Engines take forever to list your web site, if they ever list your web site at all. Keep track of which search engines that you submit to. Multiple requests to be listed by any search engine only slows the down the process of being listed.
Type in the category into the search box of the search engine that you would like to be listed by to doublecheck which category to place your website under.

Remember thousands of new web sites are being born every day. Yours is only one among a multitude. After submitting your site, forget about Search Engines. Concentrate on other things, like writing meta tags or finding a webring that links to other sites that are similar to yours. Website promotion is a never ending task. According to their URL analysis tools my website is not linked to a major search engine even though I've maintained a large high quality site for over 10 years. According to my counters installed on major pages like my home page, people occasionaly frequent my site by searching on Yahoo and Google. A-Toolbar also includes about 50 other inernet utilities for things like weather reports, biorythems, rss and news feeds...
Web CEO The freeware edition allows you to fine tune your site by cheking for technical things like do all your links work, plus software for finding top rated sites that use the same key words you do. An interesting tool to study website ranking. Freeware version is always making subtle suggestions to upgrade thier software.

Web Rings link different web sites together with other people who share the same interests. To see an example of a web ring with look at the bottom of most of my webpages. Each webring is related to what ever the webpage is about. The one in the middle of the web page authoring page links to other HTML help pages.
Search for webrings related to your site. A complete listing of webrings can be found on Webring Directory.
Ring World Directory then was part of Yahoo, now is Webring World has JavaScript based webring code. JavaScript based webring code works better if you put it on the bottom of your webpage. Your page can not load beyond the webring, if for some reason Webring World's server is down.
A lot of sites recommend banner exchange programs. I have not tried it myself. The first step is to make a banner.

Leaving your name, website, e-mail address in guestbooks is a good way to get people to visit your site. Much of the time when I am surfing for the fun of it, I read someone's guestbook. I click on the URL and have enjoyed some really good sites.
I did not have one at Smatterings for a long time, because I had one at up Plasma Resources website for six months before anyone signed it.
A webmaster with an awesome site returned my visit after I signed her guestbook. She e-mailed me; saying I had a nice site. Where was my guestbook?
Most guestbooks come from companies who make money by the selling advertising and displaying at the top of the guestbook. Usually there is a link to the company at the bottom of the guestbook.

When you come across a web site that has links similar to whatever your web site is about; ask them to link to you. The more people that know about your site, the more people will look at your site.
Some sites have a link page that you can add your site to. Some pages ask that you send them an e-mail asking for a reciprocal link.
