How to Research Via Computer

Researching Religious Information:

Step 1:

If nothing else works try a search engine.

When looking for a computer based Bible program, look for one with a searchable index. I always feel like I'm part of Babylon 5's society or have warped into Star Trek's era when ever I use the search function of computer based Bibles.

For example you are writing about angels:

"Computer search for references of angels."

Meanwhile I go to the "Find" command, and type in the word "angels." A prompt comes up asking if it should search the Old or New Testament.

"Computer, search both the Old and New Testament." I command.

I check the box that says, "Search Old and New Testament."

After a short while the computer screen shows me a list. My mind translates the information with Star Treks computer's voice. Presto, all the info I requested is at my finger tips.

The searchable texts are not as advanced as Star Trek's. One or two words work best.

Sometimes you get different results if you use the same word but a different Bible version.

Just a picture of a Bible; the link is in writing.The Bible, Revised Standard Version at the Electronics Text Center at the University of Virginia is an excellent example of a bible with a searchable index.

Bible Study Tools on crosswalk.com has 16 searchable versions of the Bible, dictionaries, commentaries, a historical writing section and more.
Biblical Resource Sites Great for topical searches. Includes a search engine for Christian Classics Ethereal Library, Nag Hammadi Library, 9 different searchable Bibles, and more.
Blue Letter Bible Based on the King James Version. Word or Phrase Search linked with 6 Bible Dictionaries for any English Word. Strong's Number Search Tool searches a Hebrew/Greek Concordance plus a Lexicon, for any Strong's Number.
e-Sword Home Free Bible study software to use on your computer. Bibles, commentaries and dictionaries are readily viewed without having to "tile windows. Integrated editor and search capabilities. The verses in the commentaries are linked with the Bible and you can search multiple versions all at once. Well worth the download time. A download manager is very helpful tool for obtaining this program.

Step 2:

Read whatever you can get your hands on. Read as many books on the subject as you can either afford, find at the library or read in the book store about what ever topic you are researching with caution. Ask questions and go back to step 1.

Christian Classics Ethereal Library has a good collection of on-line Christian reference books, as well as fiction and hymns.
Online Bible Software This Bible Study freeware program lets you add entire books, different Bible versions, commentaries and dictionaries to your computer and have multiple hyper-linked reference sources open at the same time. You need a download manager for this program too. Choose their Components link then choose their Installation files link to get started.
Stories of the Prophets the complete English translation text of Islamic author Al-Imam Ibn Khathir's book written 1301-1372 C.E (701-774 A.H.), translated by Mustafa Geme'ah, of Al-Azhar institute, Cairo. Some of this book differs from christian teachings but is still worth reading for another's cultures input and arguments on Biblical characters.

The Orthodox Christian Page The Eastern Orthodox point of view has information on the Western European Saints, a reading section, some other Bible links.

Bible History Online Images and Resources for Biblical History is an awesome site. You could spend hours.

Hyper History contains 2000 files covering 3000 years. To find religious information choose the timeline of interest.

Exploring Ancient World Culture The Near East starts with Gilgamesh.
Jewish Encyclopedia The complete contents of the 12-volume Jewish Encyclopedia, which was originally published between 1901-1906. Contains over 15,000 articles and illustrations.
Resource Pages for Biblical Studies Culture A comprehensive link page. Includes Bible texts, aspects of the Mediterranean social world, and other websites on how to use your computer for biblical research.
Christ Country Information about Christian beginnings in America. George Washington's Morning Prayer, Mayflower Compact, and more.

Internet History Sourcebooks Project edited by Paul Halsall and Fordham University are vast collections of public domain and copy-permitted historical texts including Ancient History, Medieval History and Modern History.

Evidence and Paul's Journeys Excerpts from his recently published book "Evidence and Paul's Journeys: An Historical Investigation into the Travels of the Apostle Paul."

Paul and the Pauline Epistles has lots of links on Paul.

BiblioExpress is a simple reference manager for researchers that can format records in several popular styles, including ACS, APA, and MLA.

Citing Sources: APA, Chicago, MLA, Turabinian and CSE guidelines for documenting some of the most commonly-used forms of cited material, includes documenting different types of website sources.

ScholarCite a free program that helps write and format standards compliant literature references. Fill in some fields, press "Write" and the ScholarCite auto-generator creates a bibliography entry for your works cited list. APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian and the Harvard System of References supported.

Year A Calendar Revised Common Lectionary Study gives an outline of what many churches expect to hear about Sunday morning. This resource is similar to a magazines theme list for the year ahead. Though sometimes religious leaders hold the privilege of deviating from the list.
