Advice from the Old Testament

(Verses from the Good News Bible) Psalms 37:21 The wicked borrow and never pay back, but good people are generous with their gifts.

Deuteronomy 15:1-14 "At the end of every seventh year you are to cancel the debts of those who owe you money. This is how it is to be done. Each of you who has lent money to any Israelite is to cancel the debt; you must not try to collect the money; the LORD himself has declared the debt canceled. You may collect what a foreigner owes you, but you must not collect what any of your own people owe you. "The LORD your God will bless you in the land that he is giving you. Not one of your people will be poor if you obey him and carefully observe everything that I command you today. The LORD will bless you, as he has promised. You will lend money to many nations, but you will not have to borrow from any; you will have control over many nations, but no nation will have control over you. "If in any of the towns in the land that the LORD your God is giving you there are Israelites in need, then do not be selfish and refuse to help them. Instead, be generous and lend them as much as they need. Do not refuse to lend them something, just because the year when debts are canceled is near. Do not let such an evil thought enter your mind. If you refuse to make the loan, they will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be held guilty. Give to them freely and unselfishly, and the LORD will bless you in everything you do. There will always be some Israelites who are poor and in need, and so I command you to be generous to them. "If any Israelites, male or female, sell themselves to you as slaves, you are to release them after they have served you for six years. When the seventh year comes, you must let them go free. When you set them free, do not send them away empty-handed. Give to them generously from what the LORD has blessed you with---sheep, grain, and wine.

Proverbs 19:17 When you give to the poor, it is like lending to the LORD, and the LORD will pay you back.

Isaiah 58:7-10 Share your food with the hungry and open your homes to the homeless poor. Give clothes to those who have nothing to wear, and do not refuse to help your own relatives. "Then my favor will shine on you like the morning sun, and your wounds will be quickly healed. I will always be with you to save you; my presence will protect you on every side. When you pray, I will answer you. When you call to me, I will respond. "If you put an end to oppression, to every gesture of contempt, and to every evil word; if you give food to the hungry and satisfy those who are in need, then the darkness around you will turn to the brightness of noon.

(Verse from Modern King James Version) Job 27:16-17 Though he heaps up silver like the dust, and prepares clothing like the clay, he may prepare, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

(Verses from the Good News Bible) Proverbs 28:8 If you get rich by charging interest and taking advantage of people, your wealth will go to someone who is kind to the poor.

Ecclesiates 11:1-2 Invest your money in foreign trade, and one of these days you will make a profit. Put your investments in several places---many places even---because you never know what kind of bad luck you are going to have in this world.

(Verse from Modern King James Version) Exodus 23:8 And you shall take no bribe, for the bribe blinds the wise and perverts the words of the righteous.

(Verses from the Good News Bible) Psalm 112:5-9 Happy is the person who is generous with his loans, who runs his business honestly. A good person will never fail; he will always be remembered. He is not afraid of receiving bad news; his faith is strong, and he trusts in the LORD. He is not worried or afraid; he is certain to see his enemies defeated. He gives generously to the needy, and his kindness never fails; he will be powerful and respected.

Psalm 119:36-37 Give me the desire to obey your laws rather than to get rich. Keep me from paying attention to what is worthless; be good to me, as you have promised.

Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the LORD by making him an offering from the best of all that your land produces. If you do, your barns will be filled with grain, and you will have too much wine to store it all.

Proverbs 11:24-28 Some people spend their money freely and still grow richer. Others are cautious, and yet grow poorer. Be generous, and you will be prosperous. Help others, and you will be helped. People curse someone who hoards grain, waiting for a higher price, but they praise the one who puts it up for sale. If your goals are good, you will be respected, but if you are looking for trouble, that is what you will get. Those who depend on their wealth will fall like the leaves of autumn, but the righteous will prosper like the leaves of summer.

(Verse from God's Word) Proverbs 23:4-8 Do not wear yourself out getting rich. Be smart enough to stop. Will you catch only a fleeting glimpse of wealth before it is gone? It makes wings for itself like an eagle flying into the sky. Do not eat the food of one who is stingy, and do not crave his delicacies. As he calculates the cost to himself, this is what he does: He tells you, "Eat and drink," but he doesn't really mean it. You will vomit the little bit you have eaten and spoil your pleasant conversation.
