Java Script Tip of The Week Archives has articles that cover compatibility between the two competing ways to view the internet. The author now writes for someone else but I found much of his information to be useful. His Dynamic HTML section was beyond me, but the Doc Java link is worth taking a look at.
Have you ever wondered what your webpage looks like on an older version browser? According to my webpage counters, some people on the internet still are not Javascript enabled. I came across a program that lets you view your webpage in a non-Java mode.
Dynamics5 freeware by JanSoft will let you do that with Microsoft Explorer. Dynamic5 is an HTML editor. I will not recommend it as an editor because it lacks a spell check, and an undo function, so I see no need to try it out further. However, under the heading view; it gives you the options to view your page in 4.0 HTML or HTML 3.2. In HTML 3.2 Javascript is non-existent. I've been using it to re-evaluate my Javascript based pages.
Caution: The danger of using Java is when you update your browser the Java you are using may no longer compatible. I visited a few sites that had been written totally in Java. Vogan Heavy Industries had written three versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in three versions of Java. None of them were compatible with MS Explorer 5.5.
The slide show on my lighting inspirations page is an example of one toy I had to find another version of on this website. I tested it with Netscape 4, MS Explorer 5.2, and 5.5. It worked with fine on all three browsers.
