Smatterings: JavaScript Freeware Scripts and Links

JavaScript is a tool that adds extra ways of showing an example, much like an exploding cannon shows an example when used by a chemistry professor during what would otherwise be a boring lecture.

When using Java, like using Cascading Style Sheets you have to watch out for compatibility issues. Netscape developed it first. Many JavaScripts only work with Netscape. I do not want to use code that does not work with Microsoft, just as much as I do not want to use code that does not work with Netscape. This means I test my pages with both browsers.

Microsoft also developed their own Java, so that means there are just as many scripts out there that are not compatible with Netscape. Let the webpage author beware.

Java Script Planet Mattias Sjöberg has a neat collection of free Java scripts. Among the scripts from his collection, Tomer and Yehuda Shiran wrote a fine illustration of Murphy's Law. I used that one on my Word Processing Help Page.
JavaScript Source.com link JavaScript Source has a long list of Java scripts to choose from. I learned how to put messages on the bar that tells you where your going on the bottom of your browser, if you are viewing the page with MS Explorer.

Dynamic HTML

With DHTML place the operating instructions before the <head> section of your web page. A mouseover is an example of DHTML.

You want to put operating instructions and font specifications on top of the header so that the lettering loads first. This is important to those of us who book marked the web page because of info contained on it who are still at the mercy of internet via modems and telephone lines.

When I am looking up something quick, I am interested in content only.

During causal surfing, I am usually willing to wait for the page to load, so long as it does not take too long.


Dynamic Drive link Visit Dynamic Drive DHTML code library for free, original DHTML scripts and components. Some of the scripts from this site crashed my computer, when I tested them out. I even had to reset my bios settings. In utter frustration, I eventually settled on an animated Gif, non-Java solution on my light page. Six months later, the scripts that gave me trouble were no longer posted.

BG Audio Dr's Page has a butterfly script that I worked in with my Easter page. This site introduced me to Java Applets.
